What is it and how does it work? Skystream is a 1.8 KW wind generator produced by South West Wind Power, the world’s leading small wind generator manufacturer. Skystream connects directly to the fuse board in a residence or small business. If the wind speed is below (8 mph / 3.5 m/s – very light breeze) there is no output from Skystream and all of the needed power is supplied by the utility grid. As wind speeds increase, Skystream's output increases and energy drawn from the grid reduces accordingly. In high wind speeds, any excess energy from Skystream spills back to the grid (unfortunately no payment for overspill currently available in R.O.I.) How much energy will Skystream produce and how much will it save me? Skystream should produce between 2500 and 5000 units of electricity (KWh) per annum depending on average wind speeds and exposure at the site. Savings can typically run from 30 to 70% depending on electricity consumption and wind resource available at site. See specifications and performance overleaf. What is the benefit to the environment if I install a Skystream? Over its life 20 year design life, the Skystream can avoid up to 60 tons of CO2 emissions. Does Skystream create noise and interfere with TV signals? Skystream produces a small amount of noise generally drowned out by background noise as wind speeds increase. It does not interfere with TV and other communication signals. How is Skystream protected in storm force winds? How much maintenance does it require? It is protected using patented electronically controlled stall regulation. There are only two moving parts, hence regular routine maintenance is not required. Should my neighbours be concerned with safety if I install a Skystream? No, Skystream is certified to IEC-61400-2 the standard for small wind turbine safety performance. Will E.S.B. Networks allow me to connect Skystream into the grid? Yes, Skystream is approved for grid connection by E.S.B. Networks. Will I need planning permission for Skystream? Small wind turbines up to 13 m in height, 6 m rotor and 14 m away from neighbours perimeter are exempt. For residential planning information, click here - for commercial planning details click here . Will I have to change any of the wiring in my house? No, Skystream can be installed without the need to change wiring or appliances Is my site suitable for Skystream? How is it mounted? Sites with average wind speeds in excess of 5 m/s (12 mph) not sheltered by trees or buildings are suitable. Ideally the turbine rotor blades should be 7m above all obstacles within a 75m radius approx, especially in the direction of prevailing winds from the south west. It is recommended that a higher tower (up to 18m) be used to clear obstructions. Planning permission will be required in this situation. Skystream is mounted on space saving, self supporting monopole towers from 10m to 18m high and available in attractive colours. A less expensive guy wired tower, 21m high is also available How much will Skystream cost me? Budget price including 10 m tower and anchor bolts for supply, installation and commissioning starts at €10,000 + VAT. Costs for complete turnkey project including foundation, trenching and cabling work can be in the range €11 to 12k + VAT depending on site. No grant aid currently available in the R.O.I.
